A Boy Print E-mail
Written by Jan Turner-Jones

Verse 1

My mother hugs and kisses me,
I hope my classmates do not see.
On Family Day there’s quite a crowd
And Dida laughs and talks too loud.
His voice, her scarf, are thorns in me,
I hope my teacher doesn’t see.

Verse 2

I swap my lunch for cheese and ham
And often, peanut paste or jam.
The boys make jokes, but do not punch,
And one kid says: “I like your lunch.”
I hope this means he’s friends with me,
I hope the other kids all see.

Verse 3

I always take the long way home,
It means I needn’t walk alone.
A girl holds hands and kisses me,
I hope her father doesn’t see.
My mother waits beside the gate –
She fusses every time I’m late.

Verse 4

On special days I’m forced to wear
Traditional clothes I cannot bear.
Another kid wears clothes like mine,
I watch his face – he seems just fine.
I smile at him, he smiles at me,
I hope the real kids do not see.

I live by halves
In different places
Different customs
Different faces.
Am I broken?
Does it show?
Tell the truth
I do not know.
